Bigot — noun — a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his own
Prejudiced — adjective — being biased or having a belief or attitude formed beforehand
I know that people are very much offended when you call them a bigot or say they are prejudiced. They usually counter with “Oh I am no such thing!!!” But in reality aren’t we all bigots and prejudiced to one degree or another? So many of us are so set in our beliefs that it is almost impossible to imagine changing our views. Isn’t that the very definition above? So many of us never bother to look at something outside our current belief system. We spend hours listening to the talking heads on Fox News and never think of tuning into another version of reality.
Is our country, or maybe even our world, doomed to constant conflict among us? Will any of us be courageous enough to look outside our current beliefs for a different view. Will any of us actually change our biases when the facts show us we are wrong about any topic?
Let’s at least once in a while try not being a bigot. Lets take to heart the examples of how to love our brothers. We don’t need to be so fearful of everything that is different from us. Let’s try to do that at least a couple of time in the coming week. Maybe it just could become a habit….
