Being A Christian…

We have made of Christianity a complicated, contradictory amalgamation of fear, fantasy, patriotism, self-justification and self-congratulations that would baffle anyone who knew the dusty Galilean founder.

We can’t decide (or agree) if ‘being a Christian’ is something we do or have or believe. Most of us can’t even explain or define it to ourselves. But most of us do have the certainty that our religion is better than that other religion. And for many of us, our deepest faith is not in how true our faith is but in how false the other faith must be….

We are like the children Jesus described (Luke 7:32) who wanted a god  – and a faith – that danced to their own tune – not that actually required anything of them.

How often have you seen Christianity marketed like an exclusive club with the only decoder ring for all the theological jargon? Is it really so difficult to keep it simple and walk in faith without presumption? Now that’s a philosophy any of us could explain to a child.

Mr. Morford over at Red Letter Christians has got me to thinking once again. His premise here is that Christianity should be so simple at to be explainable to a child. As he shows by the words above that is not the religion we currently have. We can’t even explain it to ourselves, let alone what our children might understand.

I am convinced that many and maybe even most Christians today have just never tried to determine if they are indeed doing what Jesus intended.  Instead they just go to church once in a while to get a required dose of religion to maybe stave off a future in hell. Some likely put much more thought into buying a car than they do about the religion they belong. Their church is more like a clubhouse.

Some take the easy way out and let others tell them what to believe. That is as long as their message is easy. After all, we don’t want our religion interfering with the rest of our lives do we? It must be reserved for that occasional Sunday morning visit. Is this what that man from Nazareth intended?  I think not……
