Archives For November 30, 1999

I am bringing over a series of posts for my Sunday entries from my now inactive blog over at RedLetterLiving. This is the last of a six-part series from about a year ago about the importance of the Bible in my spiritual life. After a ten-year study I finally understand what millions of other have discovered before me…. It’s about Jesus, not the Bible…

Wall Signs….

Wall Sign Washington State 2009

Old time wall signs fascinate me. They are a look back into history. This one was found somewhere in Washington State, I’m just not sure where?

The History Of….

January 24, 2014

SnippetIts time for a new category of posts here at RJsCorner. Like all my successful blogging buddies out their we must be constantly changing in order to remain fresh.  This new category is called “The History Of…” and it will become an integral part of my daily afternoon snippets.

I am a lifelong U.S. history buff. The bookshelf presently behind me is loaded with biographies of our best people. Questioning how we got to where we are as a country is always on my mind.  So, why not target that for some specific posts?

This category will mostly take the form of pictures and maybe some brief words on the topic at hand. Of course, these snippets will only be a small fragment of the complete story. If you want to start a discussion of any of the topics just leave a comment and see what happens.

About History…

January 16, 2013

TimeThere is an awful lot of difference between reading something and actually seeing it, for you can never tell, till you see it, just how big a liar History is. —  1926 Will Rogers

I doubt if there is a thing in the world as wrong and unreliable as History. History ain’t what it is; it’s what some writer wanted it to be, and I just happened to thing I bet ours is as crooked as the rest. I bet we have started just as much devilment as was ever started against us — maybe more.  —  March 12,1932  Will Rogers

Don’t be misled by History, or any other unreliable source.  — April 14,1935 Will Rogers

It is not often that I give you three Will Roger’s quotes in one post but I wanted to make a point here.  As Will says history is just one writer’s version of what happened. So, in order to try to balance all that out you have to look at several different sources for the same events and even over different time periods.  I was just watching a show on the History Channel that show that DNA evidence among other scientific findings will likely change the history of Christopher Columbus. It seems that he was not an Italian common man but was most likely a Spanish aristocrat. Examples like this show that history is never a fixed thing.

Amber Lights…

November 15, 2012

But every one of us write our own history. If it sounds better the way we want it than the way it might have been why that don’t stop us any more than an amber light. – September17, 1933  Will Rogers

Will’s quote here is still pretty much true today except to maybe change the word amber to red. The number one cause of accidents now are people running red lights.

Being a senior citizen I have lived in historical times. I personally saw the Civil Rights marches not in person but on TV.  I was a naive teen during much of that time so I couldn’t understand why people were treated so badly just because of the color of their skin. I heard the inspiring words of Martin Luther King but somehow didn’t really take them to heart until sometime later.
